Day 01

July 27

This was one of those days that I go early into work - as in 4 AM - so I can leave about lunch time. I've got Frost all ready to go, waiting in the garage. I tend to some server stuff and other items, then head back to the Holler at the lunch bell where fortunately my new HawksHead TPMS has just been delivered as I hoped. I toss it in the saddlebag and I'm ready to hit the road.

Lady Bug, my precious and usually happy rescue pooch, knows what a packed two wheeler in the driveway means. And she's not real happy about missing her morning belly rubs at all. I tell her before I leave -

"Don't worry old girl, hopefully I'll be back and resume service."

Cross-town traffic is not too bad as I head east on I40 to meet up with Fali and Charlie, my riding friends.

I thought the TPMS might show up late, so I had let them know that I might be a little later than originally planned. But I pull in within ten minutes of when I targeted to get there. I tell them

"Boys, I'm afraid we are going to roast on the way up. So if you get too hot, we'll pull off and take a break."

With that we're off like a dirty shirt, making good time toward Knoxville. Thankfully, Knoxville rush hour traffic hasn't picked up yet, so we slide through the city pretty quickly.

Soon we are on the great trucker highway of the East - I81. It will take us to our destination for the evening - a Days Inn Motel in Wytheville, Virginia.

The sky doesn't look too promising, but at this point some cool liquid sunshine would not be bad at all.

It still appears to be more threatening than real, so we just keep on rolling along.

We beat the rain storm to the motel and get our rooms sorted and such.

From the maps, there were several eating options in the area. As it turns out, there is a Shoney's right next door and a Chinese food place. After much deliberations, we decide to pay Shoney's a visit. My experience with them has been they are usually pretty good if they are in a small town setting. This one is and it is - the buffet is fresh and well attended to and surely fills the empty spot. There were few fragments that remained after the battle was over.

With our stomachs properly stuffed and our breakfast option decided, we wander back to the motel. I plug in the 'head' of my TPMS system so it can get it's initial charge, then it's off to slumberland. I have no trouble finding the correct route without a GPS as 3 AM came awful early this morning.
